Correcting Crowding and Spacing Issues

Crowding

Crowding is when there isn’t enough room within the jaws for all the teeth to fit normally. The teeth may be twisted or displaced. Crowding occurs when the size of the teeth doesn’t match the size of the jaw or when the teeth are larger than the available space. Crowding can be caused by baby teeth falling out too early or too late, or by teeth coming in the wrong way.

If the crowding in the mouth is severe, an expander may be the ideal treatment option, allowing the jaw to widen and creating more space. For minor cases of crowding, metal braces or clear aligners do a wonderful job of slowly readjusting the teeth and creating more space.

Spacing

Spacing of the teeth is the opposite of crowding. It means there is too much space between your teeth, creating gaps. This usually happens when the teeth are too small for the space. Spacing can also be caused by protruding teeth, missing or stuck teeth, or abnormal attachments of gum tissue to the gums. Braces and clear aligners are the most popular treatment options for spacing.

01.

Process

  • We start with a comprehensive exam, including digital imaging, to assess crowding, bite alignment, and spacing needs.
  • Your dentist will design a custom plan outlining how your teeth will be gradually guided into healthier positions.
  • You will begin treatment with braces or clear aligners that apply gentle, controlled pressure to gradually move crowded teeth.
  • Periodic check-ins allow adjustments to be made and your alignment to stay on track.

02.

Next Steps

  • You’ll receive a retainer to keep your teeth from shifting back and to protect your results. Wear it consistently.
  • Continue brushing, flossing, and cleaning around your retainer to keep teeth and gums healthy.
  • Attend regular checkups. Routine visits allow your dentist to monitor alignment, bite stability, and overall oral health.
  • If you notice shifting, discomfort, or retainer issues, contact your dental team promptly for adjustments.

FAQ

  • How are crowded teeth corrected?

Crowded teeth are corrected by gradually guiding them into better positions using orthodontic solutions such as clear aligners or braces. These treatments apply gentle, controlled pressure over time, allowing teeth to shift safely into alignment while maintaining comfort and function.

  • What are some causes of spacing issues?

Spacing issues can be caused by missing teeth, early loss of baby teeth, jaw size, or natural tooth development. Habits, genetics, and bite alignment can also contribute to gaps forming between teeth over time.

  • Will I need to wear a retainer after treatment?

Yes, we typically recommend a retainer after treatment to help keep your teeth in their new positions and maintain your results long term.
