Tooth Extractions for Pain Relief and Protection
At Dinwiddie Dental, our goal is always to help you keep your natural teeth for as long as possible. We believe preserving your smile is one of the best ways to support your long-term oral health and comfort. However, there are certain situations in which removing a tooth is the safest and most effective option.
When a tooth is severely decayed, badly infected, or damaged beyond repair, an extraction may be necessary to prevent the problem from spreading to surrounding teeth and gums. In some cases, removing the tooth can relieve pain, stop infection, and protect the health of your jawbone and overall smile.
Our team will always explore every possible treatment option first, and if an extraction is recommended, we’ll make sure you feel informed, comfortable, and supported every step of the way.

Process of Tooth Extraction
- We begin with a thorough exam and X-rays to evaluate the tooth and surrounding structures.

What Are the Next Steps?
- Bite down on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes after the extraction to form a blood clot. It is important not to disturb the blood clot for the next 24 hours. That means you should avoid sucking through straws, or you risk developing a dry socket.
- For swelling, we recommend applying an ice pack to the outer cheek. Once the swelling has decreased, a warm compress can be placed in the same area for comfort.
- You can also gently rinse your mouth with salt water to keep the extraction area clean.
